Doing something funny for money beats the credit crunch

The Saturdays for Comic Relief

Comic Relief and Red Nose Day 2009 has beat its previous 2007 record by raising over £57 million for good causes.

The Saturdays reached number 2 with official Comic Relief single, ‘Just Can’t Get Enough’

Despite the economic crisis, people in the UK have donated more money to the charity than ever before.  The £57 million raised beats 2007’s Red Nose Day total of £40 million at the end of the night.

The amount raised will continue to rise as money from merchandise purchases and donations pours in over the next few weeks.

Two official Comic Relief singles are currently in the charts with girl band, The Saturdays’ version of Depeche Mode’s Just Can’t Get Enough which was on Sunday held off the top spot by Flo Rida’s Right Round.

Gavin and Stacey stars, Ruth Jones and Rob Brydon also enlisted the help of Tom Jones in (Barry) Islands In The Stream, a cover of the Bee Gees’ classic as the other official single which reached number 1 the following Sunday.

BBC One coverage of the night began at 7pm on Friday 13th March.  Comedy sketches were provided by The Royle Family, French and Saunders, Catherine Tate and Little Britain stars David Walliams and Matt Lucas, with a guest appearance by Robbie Williams.
